Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper who helped Argentina win the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, made a promise to the Indian crowd during his visit to Kolkata on Tuesday. The Aston Villa star, who is the first reigning World Cup champion to visit the city of joy, said that he wants to bring his teammate and friend Lionel Messi to play in India someday.

Martinez, who was named the Golden Glove winner at the World Cup, received a rapturous welcome from thousands of fans who gathered to see him also waving the Argentine flag, signing autographs, and also posed for selfies with his admirers. Welcomed by enthusiastic East Bengal fans, Martinez was presented with the revered red and yellow jersey of the club as a token of their appreciation, solidifying his connection with the passionate supporters.

Martinez said that he was overwhelmed by the love and passion of the Indian fans and that he felt a connection with them. "I am really pleased to be here, It's a dream come true coming to India. Going in the car through the streets made me realize how beautiful this country is and how pleased I am to be here. So, thank you everyone for coming. Let’s enjoy the show and this is not over, I want to bring Messi here to play in India," said Martinez to which an enthusiastic crowd roared to life.

The shot-stopper also recalled some moments from the World Cup and said that Messi gave a speech before the World Cup final and thanked all the teammates for all they had done for him. Martinez, who inaugurated the Kolkata Friendship Cup, was impressed by the passion of the Indian fans who were elated to see ‘Dibu’ as some jumped over barricades to meet him.

Messi visited India once, back in 2011, with the Argentina team for a FIFA international friendly against Venezuela. Indian fans will hope the seven-time World Cup winner will grace the pitch in India before hanging up his boots.
