'They couldn't do it because of La Liga'

Lionel Messi was asked for more details about his Barcelona exit. The Argentine superstar revealed that both parties tried a lot. However, La Liga's salary limit proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Messi's departure.

"What's clear is I did everything possible, and they (Barca) couldn't do it because of La Liga.

"A lot of things have been said about me, but on my behalf, we did everything I could because I wanted to stay. Last year I didn't want to stay and I said it. This year I did and I couldn't," Messi said.

In 778 games for Barcelona, Messi scored 672 goals and registered 305 assists since making his debut in October 2004.
