The Ashes 2023 has reached the end of its third Test, and needless to say the ongoing season of the tournament is filled with several instances that will be remembered for a long time to come. One such instance will be the controversial Bairstow dismissal that took place during the second Test of the tournament. The English cricketer was dismissed by Alex Carey in a manner that questioned the spirit of cricket, despite the fact that it was legal as per the rulebooks. A similar incident took place in a game of Yorkshire Premier League Nation, where a batter was dismissed in a controversial manner.

During a game between Sessay Cricket Club and York Cricket Club at the former’s homeground, a batter stepped out of the crease to congratulate his partner for his half-century. However, the decision to step out cost him his wicket as the fielder was quick to notice this, and he threw the ball to the wicketkeeper.

By the time the batter realised this and returned back to the crease, the wicketkeeper had made the most of the opportunity and dismissed the rival batsman. The video went viral in no time and while some users compared the incident to the one that took place in Ashes 2023, others questioned whether the incident justifies the ‘spirit of cricket’.

Notably, during the second game of the Ashes 2023, Jonny Bairstow ducked a delivery from Cameron Green, and stepped out of the crease thinking the ball was dead. However, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey was quick to take notice of this before the ball was dead, and he ended up dismissing the English glovesman. The incident sparked a debate in the cricket fraternity, as while some appreciated Carey for showing gamesmanship, others questioned the ‘spirit of game’.
