The ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics will be remembered not only for some records that were broken or set, but also for the controversies which have been unfolding since the Games were declared open at the River Seine in Paris on Friday, July 26. After the Summer Games kickstarted, boxing ring marred most controversies, the prominent one being the gender row.
Adding to it, in another instance, Bulgaria’s Svetlana Staneva hogged the limelight after she made an ‘X’ gesture post her defeat. The Bulgarian, who was taking on Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting in the 57kg women’s quarterfinals on Sunday, lost 5-0 by unanimous decision. Soon after he defeat, Staneva gestured an X, video of which has been doing rounds on social media.

Speaking of the X gesture, several have claimed that the gesture was used to denote that she has XX (female) chromosomes. After the match, the Bulgarian even opted to not shake hands with Yu-Ting.
It is to be noted that Lin Yu-Ting is one of the two boxers who have been amid the gender row controversy at the Paris Olympics 2024. Ting also failed the gender tests last year, along with Imane Khelif at the World Championships. However, the two were cleared by the International Olympic Committee to compete in women’s boxing events on the basis of gender eligibility on athlete’s passport gender.
