On Sunday, August 4, former Olympic gold medallist, Carolina Marin of Spain was left in tears after an injury forced her early withdrawal in the women’s singles semifinals clash. The Spaniard was leading the match 21-14, 10-6 against He Bing Jiao of China when she struggled with injury.
Marin, despite having taken the first set and leading the second set with a scoreline of 10-6, landed awkwardly on her right knee, leaving her in pain. The Spainard jumped to execute a return shot on her backhand, and ended up awkwardly on the court. Marin soon afterwards burst into tears as the medical team checked upon her.
However, the Marin put on a knee brace at that moment but continued to struggle with pain, forcing her to withdraw after failing to get two points. She limped her way to one side and wept inconsolably on the floor.
