Brazilian tennis star Beatriz Haddad Maia scripted history on July 8, Saturday, as she made it to the fourth round of Wimbledon Championship 2023. With her victory in round three, Maia became the second Brazilian woman to reach R4 at Wimbledon, and the first in 47 years since Maria Bueno in 1976.

The world number 13 singles player took down Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-2 to advance into R4 for the first time in her career. As soon as she clinched victory over her Romanian rival, the crowd erupted in cheers and claps.

The 26-year-old tennis player earlier created history as she became the first Brazilian woman to reach the top 10 in the WTA rankings. Maia achieved this feat after her semifinal run at Roland Garros in May 2023, where she took a 3-0 lead in the game.

The WTA world number 37 fought hard during the game and could be heard urging herself to “fight”, and though she managed to make her way back with a break of her own, Haddad Maia attacked her second serve once again and served out in the opening set. Cirstea was seen frustrated with the long rallies and had a word with her coach but in no time the game went 4-0 up in the second round.

The 33-year-old Romanian managed to make it in the game during the second set and induced an unforced error off Haddad Maia’s forehand before serving. Meanwhile, the Brazilian tennis star maintained an upper hand in the game, and she ended up winning the final service game and got the victory on her first match point.
