While football stadiums are usually places of great entertainment and make for a magnificent sight when the crowds cheer for their favourite teams or players, things took an ugly turn during the Ligue 1 encounter between Nice and Marseille on Sunday. While footballer Dimitri Payet had a bottle thrown at him while he was going to take a corner, he threw the bottle back at the fans, which caused a big brawl at the venue.

Notably, Marseille star player was set to take a corner when a bottle came flying from the crowds and hit him. The French midfielder couldn't keep his emotions in check either and retaliated by throwing the bottle back at the crowd. The match was being played at Nice's home ground - the Allianz Riveria and the home crowd wasn't making it easy for the oppositions trying to get under their skin. While Nice had taken a lead, thanks to a goal from Kasper Dolberg at the start of the second half, the game had to be suspended after Payet was hit with a bottle.

Check out the video of the incident here:

Marseille star's reaction infuriated the crowd and home fans stormed into the stadium as more bottles and objects started to be thrown at the Marseille players. There were also quite a few tussles with the Nice players as well as a handful of fans. Consequently, the match could not be played further after the 75th minute since the brawl had erupted in literally the entire stadium.

What was interesting is that the security also failed to control the crowd as they were simply outnumbered by the crowds storming into the stadium. Moreover, one of the Marseille coaching staff was also seen punching a Nice fan on the face when the latter tried to attack the footballers. Clearly, the match hasn't been a great ambassador for the sport of football in general or Ligue 1 in particular.

Later, Nice captain, Dante tried convincing the Marseille players to go ahead with the match and finish it. However, post what had just happened, the visitors were in no mood to play further and decided to abandon the match. This could also mean three points lost for Marseille. In fact, the Marseille players have also reportedly sustained injuries with Payet left with a huge scratch on his back.
