The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, surprised his supporters and critics alike when he played John Cena’s song “The Time Is Now” at the end of his speech in Johannesburg on Saturday. Malema, who is known for his radical and controversial views on land reform, nationalization, and anti-corruption, used the song as a way to motivate his followers and challenge his opponents.
“You must make sure that you are one of the people, who are going to deliver the country with freedom in our lifetime. Hail Africa!,” Malema said, before blasting Cena’s theme song on the speakers.

The song, which features Cena rapping about his confidence and dominance in the WWE ring, has become a popular meme on the internet, often used to surprise or prank unsuspecting viewers. Cena, who is a 16-time world champion in WWE, has also transitioned into a successful actor and rapper, starring in movies such as Trainwreck, Bumblebee, F9, and The Suicide Squad. He is also set to reprise his role as Peacemaker in an upcoming HBO Max series.
Cena has not commented on Malema’s use of his song. He has a connection with South Africa as he also participated in a viral dance challenge with a local singer named Sho Madjozi, who wrote a song dedicated to him.
It is not clear whether Malema is a fan of Cena or WWE, or whether he was just trying to make a statement with his choice of music. Either way, he has certainly drawn attention to his cause and his party, which is preparing for the local government elections later this year.
