It wasn't the best of performances with the bat for South Africa by any means. While they had scored 11 runs in the first over itself and would have ideally looked to build on from there on, they lost a wicket in the second over and kept losing them in regular intervals from there to make matters very difficult for themselves.
Not a thing seemed to be going their way. Quinton de Kock got bowled in a bizarre fashion, not realising that the ball was heading towards the wickets after bouncing on the pitch after he had played a scoop straight to his thighs. Later in the innings, Keshav Maharaj had a rather embarrassing dismissal.
This happened in the third ball of the 15th over of the South African batting innings when Pat Cummins was the bowler and Maharaj himself was on strike. Although the Australian vice-captain had bowled a ball slightly short of a length, Maharaj played the ball towards the point region where the fielder collected the ball and sensing an opportunity to run out the non-striker Aiden Markram, took a shy at the stumps but missed.
Maharaj wanted to take a run off the overthrow and almost ran halfway but Markram wasn't interested at all, when Maharaj realised that his partner won't be coming for a run, he tried to run back to his end and should have made it comfortably but for the slip. The spinner slipped and fell on the pitch and the time taken by him to recover from there meant, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade had enough time to collect a wide throw, take his time before dislodging the bails.

However, South Africa were not demoralised by the manner in which their batters performed. Instead, they fought bravely in the second half of the match and were in the game till the 20th over. However, Marcus Stoinis' brief cameo helped Australia beat South Africa in the penultimate ball of the 20th over.
