West Indian legend Kieron Pollard was dismissed in an unusual fashion in Thursday’s encounter between the Trinbago Knight Riders and the Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League. TKR are currently in second position in the points table with four wins in seven games while BR are below them at fourth position with three wins in eight games.

Royals’ skipper Rovman Powell won the toss and asked Kieron Pollard’s TKR to bat first at the Queen’s Park Oval. The decision seemed controversial, as the TKR batters posted a mammoth total of 208 in the first inning. This peculiar incident happened in the innings during the 10th over.

Rahkeem Cornwall was bowling to the pair of Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard with 78 runs on the board for a loss of two wickets. Cornwall bowled a length ball on the leg-stump, which was carefully negotiated by Pollard towards short fine leg. Kyle Mayers collected the ball swiftly, but Pollard and Pooran were involved in a major mixup. Both batters ran for a single, which looked quite difficult from the beginning, judging by Mayers’ fielding ability.

Pollard withdrew from the run at the last moment and ran back to the strikers’ end, but it was too late, as Pooran had also reached that end. Mayers threw the ball towards Cornwall, and the latter dislodged the bails effortlessly. The two batters were involved in a light argument as to whose call it was but seemed to end it on peaceful terms as they fistbumped each other. As Pooran came from the other end, it was initially thought that he was dismissed, and he started walking back to the dressing room.

The TV umpires checked the replays, and it was concluded that it was in fact Pooran, who had reached the crease first and not Pollard. Hence, Pooran was called back, and TKR skipper Pollard was dismissed. This turned out to be a blessing in heaven because Pooran went on to score an unbeaten century.

He ended the inning with 102 (53) and took his team to a mammoth score of 208.  The Royals kept losing wickets at frequent intervals and, as a result, managed to put on a shallow score of 166 in their 20 overs. Kyle Mayers played a fighting knock of 70 (45), but that was not enough as TKR sealed the game with a commendable margin of 42 runs.
