Team India defeated South Africa by a huge difference of 243 runs on Sunday as Virat Kohli smashed his 49th ODI ton on his birthday to equalise legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar's record of the most ODI tons in history. During a press conference, which was taking place simultaneously with India's clash against South Africa, Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis refused to congratulate the Indian stalwart for his historic achievement.

Rohit Sharma-led India are currently on an eight-game winning streak in the ODI World Cup 2023 as they have managed to win all their fixtures till now. On Sunday, India restricted second-placed South Africa to 83 runs during a 327-run chase and solidified their top-place finish in the group stage. Virat Kohli with his century and Ravindra Jadeja with his fifer were the leaders of the match in the batting and bowling departments respectively.

During a post-match interaction with the media, Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis was asked whether he would want to congratulate Virat Kohli on his historic century against the Proteas. The reporter asked Mendis, "Virat Kohli has just scored his 49th ODI ton. Would you like to congratulate him?" The 28-year-old replied, "Why would I want to congratulate him?", and the whole conference room was filled with laughter.

Notably, Sri Lanka are scheduled to face Bangladesh in their penultimate group-stage fixture in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The Asian rivals will go head-to-head on Monday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. While Bangladesh are already out of CWC 2023 semi-final contention, Sri Lanka will look to win their remaining two matches to stand a chance to qualify for the further stages.
