A Mexican fan is in critical care following a terrifying stabbing incident on Sunday at a CONCACAF Gold Cup match between Mexico and Qatar. The match, which was taking place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, saw a fight break out near the end of the match. The victim had a wound near his collarbone and was rushed to a hospital following the attack.

The fight broke out among the Mexico supporters, and one of the participants was seen carrying a knife. The perpetrator of the violent assault was seen by eyewitnesses holding the weapon above his head before forcing his way through the fighting. He was seen swinging the knife in an over-head stabbing motion before being pushed to the ground.  The victim stumbled out of the brawl and fell into a seat before realizing that he had been stabbed and was bleeding profusely.

Fans at the stadium tried to provide basic medical support to the victim, who was drenched in blood. He was seen pouring water on his stabbing wound and taking off his Mexico jersey and trying to stop the bleeding with it. Other Mexican fans were also quick to alert the police about the situation and hoped they would get the situation under control quickly.

In a later statement, Santa Clara Police Lt. Cuong Phan stated that the victim was in critical condition but recovering, and that the suspects had fled before being apprehended at Levi’s Stadium. While the authorities didn’t catch the perpetrators at the scene, the Santa Clara police identified the perpetrators and have released their photos to the public asking for any information which could lead to an arrest.

The match was won by Qatar 1-0. Mexico has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup as hosts, and will be looking to put this, and other violent footballing incidents that occurred in the country over the past season, behind them in time for the world’s biggest sporting event.
