Mondo Duplantis, who received the distinguished Laureus Sportsman of the Year award recently, disclosed his plan for the LA 2028 Olympics to tennis legend Novak Djokovic. At the Laureus World Sports Award held on April 21, the 25-year-old talked about his aims for the summer olympics, which will take place after three years. Mondo, in his brief career, has shattered the world record 11 times. In 2024, he bettered his feat thrice and in the ongoing year, he set a new world record of 6.27 m while taking part at his eponymous Mondo classic.
At the event, Duplantis was handed the prize by tennis legend Novak Djokovic. Impressed with the 25-year-old’s achievement of 11 world records, the former tennis player asked the athlete, “I have a question. So you have made 11 world records in 5 years. I mean first of all how do you do it and then second of all with the Los Angeles Olympics coming around how many (do) you think you're going to break?”
Replying to the question, Mondo revealed his plan saying he is looking to do something special at the grand sporting event to be held in the US. “Hopefully a few more. I think that there's more in the tank and I think that there's going to be more coming. And LA's quite a bit away too, there's three years. So that's a good bit of world records I guess that I can hopefully chip off before then and maybe we can do something special in LA too,” said the young athlete.
MondoDuplantis expresses gratitude to his family for his latest major achievement
Mondo had an excellent 2024 season. Besides setting three new world records, he also pulled off his second gold medal on the trot at the World Indoor Championship and the Paris Olympics 2024. He thanked his family for his latest award victory. In his speech, he mentioned his parents and fiancee for unwavering support in his journey to the award triumph.
“I think that I'm really a product of my environment and so I really want to give a really really big shout out to mom and dad, Dez, my family, BSG, the guys. I definitely wouldn't be in this position, wouldn't be holding any award if it wasn't for those people that inspired me so much and made me who I am today. So thank you guys so much,” added Duplantis.
