New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon along with a delegation is currently in India. On Monday, March 17, the Kiwi delegation was hosted by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital, New Delhi. During their interaction, the two heads of their respective nations shared a light moment as they recalled the recently-concluded ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 final. It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma-led Team India defeated New Zealand in the summit clash in Dubai by four wickets to clinch their second ICC title in just nine months.

Speaking during the meet, PM Luxon jokingly said that he was happy that the Indian PM did not bring India’s Champions Trophy 2025 win on the table. However, the Kiwi politician also reminded his Indian counterpart of the side’s historic 3-0 clean sweep in Test series, which came later last year.

Appreciate that PM Modi didn't bring up NZ's CT loss to India: PM Luxon

"I really appreciate that PM Modi didn't bring up New Zealand's Champions Trophy loss to India, and I didn't mention our Test victories in India. Let's keep it that way and avoid a diplomatic incident," Luxon joked as he drew cheers from the room. After this statement, the Indian Prime Minister was also left in splits while former New Zealand cricketer, Ross Taylor, who is also part of the delegation also laughed out on it.

While PM Modi's unfiltered reaction reflected his appreciation for the light-hearted cricket banter, his counterpart from New Zealand meanwhile hailed India for lifting the title and called Team India as the most dominant side in the world. "During PM Modi's tenure, the Men in Blue have been the most dominant side in cricket, most recently winning the Champions Trophy in Dubai against my men in black (New Zealand cricket team). They broke many many New Zealanders' hearts in the process, including mine," said PM Luxon.
