As match referee Clement Turpin blew the full-time whistle at the Stade de France, the sea of white just erupted in uproarious applause and cheer as Real Madrid registered a nail-biting 1-0 win over Liverpool to win their 14th Champions League title. The Los Blancos fans were over the moon, especially after a grueling first half of high-intensity pressing, they found a way to edge ahead and win the prestigious European trophy.

Real Madrid, for the first time in years, was not the favourite entering this fixture as Klopp’s Liverpool were functioning like a well-oiled machine that looked unbeatable for the majority of the season. But the 2021-22 La Liga champions lived up to their nickname of ‘Mentality Monster’ as they held their nerves and broke the deadlock in the 59th minute.

The key perpetrators of this match-winning goal were Fede Valverde and Madrid’s breakout star Vinicious Jr who put the ball past the keeper from six yards out. The 21-year-old has netted 22 goals this season along with 16 assists as he announced himself on the global football stage after a disappointing 2020-21 season.

The victory holds more importance for the Los Blancos as days before the final, French forward Kylian Mbappe decided to re-sign with his current Paris Saint-German after rejecting a near-sealed deal with Real Madrid. The news reports surrounding this transfer collectively agreed that the 23-year-old will be seen in the iconic white jersey with near all personal and agent terms were accepted.

After the final, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez shrugged away the questions about Mbappe and said, “Mbappé? He does not exist tonight. It’s Real Madrid party. It’s a thing of the past. Nothing has happened. Real Madrid had a perfect season”.
