Canadian singer Shawn Mendes hit the headlines in India by wearing the coveted number “18” national cricket team jersey of Virat Kohli on the opening day of the third edition of the Lollapalooza India in Mumbai. The show was kick-started by Shawn Mendes walking out on stage to a pumped up crowd at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse before delivering some of his chart-busting songs, which were sung alongside him by the fans.
Apart from Shawn Mendes, some of the top global stars who performed on the day one of the Lollapalooza India 2025 included names like Glass Animals, Zedd, Cory Wong, and Isabel LaRosa, while the Indian names performing were Niladri Kumar, Jonita Gandhi, and Divine, among others. Dressed in the iconic Indian jersey of Kohli, Mendes greeted the crowd in attendance by saying, “Dher saara pyaar (Lots of love), Mumbai”.

The stage was set alight by Shawn Mendes while performing “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” apart from singing “Treat You Better”, “Senorita”, and more, to create an atmosphere to remember for the audience. He also had a classical-pop mash-up with Niladri Kumar, sitar maestro, to bring the Indian cultural element to his overall performance.
Moreover, the tribute from Shawn Mendes for Virat Kohli has created a lot of buzz among Viratians ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, which will be played between India and New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the UAE. If the Indian cricket team go on to win the title on Sunday, March 9, then it will be their third such triumph at the expense of the Black Caps.
