During an interview with SportsTak, Shubman Gill, who is captaining Gujarat Titans in the ongoing edition of the IPL, addressed the rumours of potentially missing out on India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. The 24-year-old stated that if he is not picked for the Indian cricket team for the upcoming ICC event, even after scoring nearly 900 runs in the IPL last year, then he will cheer for the players going to the Caribbean and the USA from home.
Notably, in the IPL 2023, Gujarat Titans reached the final on the back of a stellar display of batsmanship from Shubman Gill, who scored 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33 and a strike-rate of 157.80. In the ongoing season of the IPL, his performances have dropped in comparison to last year, but still, he has scored 304 runs in nine matches at an average of 38 and a strike rate of 146.15.
When the host of SportsTak, Vikrant Gupta, mentioned the talks about Shubman Gill might or might not make India’s T20 World Cup 2024, the right-handed opening batter broke his silence on the matter. He said, “Jab meri selection ki baat aati hai toh agar IPL mein pichle saal 900 run karne ke bawjood agar team mein naam nahi aata toh phir toh ek hi cheez keh sakta hu matlab…. (As far as the talks about my selection are concerned if even after scoring 900 runs the previous season of the IPL, my name doesn’t come into the team, then I can do only one thing basically….).”
Following this, he proceeded to say, “I will cheer for the players who will make it to the team and wish them all the best.”
I'm not thinking about whether my name will be in India's T20 World Cup squad: Shubman Gill
Moreover, Shubman Gill also spoke about focusing on his role of captaining Gujarat Titans in the ongoing season of the IPL 2024. He remarked, “Currently, I’m not thinking about whether my name will be there or not. For now, I have been given a role to lead this team (Gujarat Titans). If I start thinking about that then I won’t do justice to the role I have been given.”
At the current stage of the IPL 2024, Gujarat Titans are in seventh place on the points table with four wins in nine matches with their NRR (-0.974) being the worst in the tournament.
