An unfortunate incident at the start of the main race of the 2022 British Grand Prix halted the proceedings for while as the marshals brought out red flags. A multi-car smash took place during Lap 1 and forced the race to be stopped immediately. Zhou Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo went for a spin and hit the side barricades while George Russell, Pierre Gasly, and others behind crashed into each other.

As Max Verstappen pipped pole-sitter, Carlos Sainz, to the first corner there was "carnage" behind with Zhou Guanyu's Alfa Romeo hurtling upside down into the gravel. George Russell's Mercedes, Alpine's Esteban Ocon, Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri), and the Williams of Alex Albon were also involved.

Marshalls rushed to Zhou who stayed trapped inside his stricken car. Meanwhile, the roadworthy members of the grid returned to the pits to wait for the re-start. A specialist crew attended to Zhou Guanyu who remained in his car. The Alfa Romeo driver was then safely lifted from his car and carried on a stretcher to an ambulance to take him to the medical center. Alex Albon was also taken to the medical center.
