Manchester United Manager Erik ten Hag has stressed the importance of making only necessary purchases in the January transfer window which will meet the necessary criteria of the team. Recently Man United was closing on signing Cody Gakpo but decided to not bid for him as rivals Liverpool picked him up for £37 million. 

The Red Devils urgently need to find a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, as United have only scored 23 goals in 15 Premier League games. The Portuguese International’s contract was terminated by the team for making some demeaning comments about the team, coach Ten Hag and the management. 

While speaking to the media ahead of the Premier League game against the Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ten Hag spoke about how the club is looking for quality players, who will fit the team’s criteria. He also talked about the financial aspect of the transfer for the January Window. 

Ten Hag said, "So you need players, you need numbers to cover, so we need good players, not only numbers, you need quality players to cover that. You need also competition [so] that you can make technical choices, so we are looking for the right player for our squad and that has to match the sporting criteria but also the financial criteria."

The Dutchman also stated that the team he currently has players who fit the club’s vision of moving ahead in an intense season with many fixtures. Ten Hag further expressed that the team has the vision to win games across the competitions in their calendar. 

He said, "We have a squad, we have players who are matching our criteria but with all the games that are coming, it is a tough competition. We want to be also playing in all of the competitions by winning in games and cups as well."

Ten Hag also had words of praise for right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who stepped in after the World Cup break for the Red Devils.  He said, "So I think the break was good for him. He returned, he was in the training camp in Spain and could play some games in preparation of the restart, and now he's playing two games and he's doing really well so I'm happy with his performance.  We need competition in the squad."
