Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has dismissed the over hype around Rajasthan Royals (RR) 14-year-old opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the India legend feels the teenage batter possesses a lot of talent but needs to learn more. Appearing in his third Indian Premier League (IPL) game against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on April 28, he smashed a 35-ball ton and entered the record books as the Indian batter with the fastest hundred in the league. Noting his fantastic batting display, several former cricketers and avid supporters of the sport showered a lot of praise on the youngster.

However, Gavaskar, who is known for his outspoken attitude, has advised not to overpraise Vaibhav and let the young player sharpen his batting skills. "I think he's going to develop his game even more. Sitting with Rahul Dravid, he will learn how to temper his innings. He is only going to get better and better. I do believe that he is someone we shouldn't praise to the skies," said Gavaskar while speaking to JioStar during the game between RR and Mumbai Indians (MI) in Jaipur on May 1.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi went for a duck against MI in IPL 2025

Against MI in Jaipur, Suryavanshi couldn’t be effective as he fell to Deepak Chahar after scoring a two-ball duck. Chasing 218 runs, RR failed to tackle Mumbai’s fierce bowling attack and got bundled out on 117 and registered a massive 100-run defeat. With this loss, RR are out of the playoffs contention.

Suryavanshi will look to play intrepid cricket to help RR win their remaining games and conclude this year’s campaign on a positive note. Royals will next clash against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens on May 4.
