West Bengal opener and captain Abhimanyu Easwaran will be joining the Indian Test squad in Chattogram for the two-match series against Bangladesh which starts on December 14. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the selectors are waiting for a final report from the BCCI's medical staff on Indian captain Rohit Sharma's left thumb injury which he picked up during the second ODI.

Sharma was sent to Mumbai on Wednesday, where he visited a BCCI-appointed specialist. The team management is hopeful about getting him fit before the second Test, which starts on December 22 in Mirpur. The two-match series is part of the World Test Championship.

Abhimanyu Easwaran is currently in Sylhet, Bangladesh where he captained the India A team during a two-game red-ball tour against Bangladesh A. The 27-year-old has so far made scores of 141 and 157 in his two innings. The 157-run knock helped him win the Player-of-the-Match award as India A registered a big lead and sealed the victory by an innings and 123 runs.

Easwaran was previously part of India's Test squad on their tour of England last year. The UP-born made his first-class debut in December 2013 and has grown to be one of India's top red-ball openers on the domestic circuit over the last three years. In this time, he has also posted some serious first-class numbers like 5576 runs in 134 innings at an average of 45.33, with a best of 233.

He broke through into the India-A team after a dominant Ranji Trophy season in 2018-19, when he scored 861 runs at an average of 95.66. But immediately next season he struggled a lot as in 2019-20, he managed just 258 runs at 17.20.

Now for the Test Series, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill will be India’s first-choice openers in the first Test in Chattogram if Rohit Sharma misses because of the injury. Easwaran will be the team’s backup option.
