Mohun Bagan took down Nepal’s Machhindra in the second preliminary round of the AFC Cup 2023 on Wednesday, August 16. The Indian football club took down their Nepali rivals 3-1 to reach play-offs of the tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. In the next game, the ISL club will take on Bangladesh’s Dhaka Abahani to make it to the group stage of the tournament.

The Indian men and women compound teams made it to the final of Archery World Cup 2023 on August 16, Wednesday. The Indian women’s team consists of names like Parneet Kaur, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and world champion Aditi Swami. The star trio took down Great Britain 234-233 to secure their berth in the final summit of the World Cup Stage 4.

Indian Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra urged the Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar to resolve the visa issues of athlete Kishore Jena. The Indian star javelin thrower has requested the minister to resolve the issues to enable Jena to participate in the World Athletics Championship 2023. Notably, the tournament will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27. Jena is a rising Indian javelin thrower who won gold at the 101st Sri Lankan Championships 2023.

People close to Brij Bhushan are contesting elections; government must keep its words: Bajrang Punia
Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia said that the government must keep its word of not allowing close associates of Brij Bhushan to contest the WFI elections. Punia added that if Bhushan’s close people contest for the elections, there is no chance that women wrestlers would feel safe.
In an interview with The Indian Express, the Tokyo Olympic medalist said, “Those close to Brij Bhushan are in the fray for the elections. Sanjay Kumar Singh is contesting for the post of WFI president. If Sanjay Kumar wins, it is equal to Brij Bhushan winning the elections.”
The government had promised us that those close to Brij Bhushan and his family members won’t contest. But that doesn’t seem to be the case now. The government must fulfil its promise, otherwise, women wrestlers won’t be safe. How long will women wrestlers live in fear?”
