The 16th edition of the Asia Cup kicked off with a bang as the hosting nation Pakistan managed to get a whopping 238-run victory over the debutants Nepal in the season opener. They will now clash against India in a highly-anticipated clash on September 2 in Kandy. However, the happiness of having a triumphing season opener didn’t last long for the hosts as their star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi got injured in the first match of the tournament.
In the PAK vs. NEP game, the left-arm pacer went off the field after having a discussion with the team physio. However, it is not clear whether it is a serious injury or a niggle for the Pakistan speedster. England beat New Zealand by seven wickets in the first T20I
In the first of the four T20I match series against New Zealand, England took down their rivals by a notable margin of seven wickets with 36 balls left. Riding on Glenn Philips’ 41, the Kiwis pulled up a score of 139 runs, which their rivals successfully chased and achieved it with six overs remaining.
Australia gain commanding 111-run victory over South Africa in first T20I
Australia, under the leadership of newly-appointed captain Mitchell Marsh, gained a sound 111-run victory in the inaugural T20I against South Africa. The Aussie skipper played a brilliant 92* run inning and helped the team pull up a mammoth score of 226 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The score now stands as the highest-ever score recorded at Kingsmead. Though the South Africans fought really hard to gain momentum against the Baggy Greens, their efforts fell short, and they ended up getting dismissed at 115 runs.
Mohammad Rizwan gets dismissed in bizarre run out during PAK vs. NEP Asia Cup 2023 clash
Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan got dismissed in an unconventional run-out during the inaugural clash of Asia Cup 2023. The dismissal took place in the 24th over of Pakistan’s innings, when Rizwan pushed the ball towards short cover and ran for a single. However, the Nepal player Dipendra Singh managed to pull a swift throw and while Rizwan anticipated that it might hit his body, lost focus and got run out.
ECB announces equal pay for men’s and women’s team
The England cricket team joined India, New Zealand and South Africa to announce equal pay for both men’s and women’s teams. The International Cricket Council (ICC) already announced equal prize money for both teams in ICC events. The decision came after the successful completion of Women’s Ashes 2023.
Welcoming the decision by the England and Wales Cricket Board, the England skipper Heather Knight said, “It’s really important that we continue to drive the women’s game forward and it’s fantastic to see equal match fees for England Women and England Men.”
“The direction of travel for the women’s game has always been the most important thing, creating a sustainable product that people want to watch and play, and I’m sure this will make cricket an increasingly attractive sport to girls and young women as we continue to grow the game.”
