India’s Amit Panghal defeated China’s Liu Chuang 5-0 in the quarterfinal at the ongoing World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers, underway in Bangkok, Thailand. The 28-year-old with his win not only entered the semifinals of the World Boxing Olympic Qualifiers, but also earned India’s fifth Paris Olympics quota. Furthermore, he became the only second Indian male after Nishant Dev to confirm the Paris Olympics berth. The Indian boxer, who received a by in the first round, won the next two rounds to stay in contention for the Paris Olympics spot at the final qualifying event. He then got the better of his Chinese opponent to confirm his Olympics spot.

On Saturday, June 1, the Indian grandmaster, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, stunned the world number two, Fabiano Caruana, in the fifth round of the Norway Chess 2024 at the SR-Bank's main building in Stavanger. With this big win against the American, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa entered the world’s top 10 in classical chess in FIDE’s live ratings. After beating the world number one, Magnus Carlsen, in his home tournament called the Norway Chess 2024, Rameshbabu Praggnanadhaa kept the momentum going in the fifth round clash against Fabiano Caruana. In a draw position in theoretical terms, Caruana had a massive blunder on move 66, allowing Praggnanadhaa to get the better of him in the pawn-knight endgame.

Indian women's doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand got knocked out of the Singapore Open 2024 after their disappointing semifinal defeat on June 1, Saturday. The Indians went down to their Japanese counterparts Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida in the Super 750 women’s doubles by a score line of 21-23, 11-21. Gayatri and Treesa put on a fantastic fight in a 47-minute-long battle; however, their effort fell short as their much higher-ranked rivals took them down.
