A week after the Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest on the football pitch, the club pulled off a spirited performance to register an emotional 1-0 win against Newcastle at the Kenilworth Road in the Premier League to jump a place in the bottom half of the points table. Andros Townsend, who scored the eventual winner for Luton Town in the 25th minute, spoke about the significance of the game and said, “All the chat throughout the week was 'do it for our captain'.”

Rebecca Welch becomes first female referee to officiate in EPL match

Rebecca Welch became the first female referee in an EPL match when she officiated Fulham’s clash against Burnley at Craven Cottage on Saturday. In the latest match as an EPL referee, she was booed for turning down two major foul appeals in the first 10 minutes. The game saw Burnley registering a 2-0 clash over their counterparts. 

The Saturday clash wasn’t Welch’s first outing in the English top-tier.  In 2021, Welch became the first woman appointed to referee a match in the English Football League when she officiated the fourth-tier fixture between Harrogate and Port Vale.

Chirag Sen, Tanvi Sharma sail to 85th Senior National Badminton Championships final

Indian shuttles Chirag Sen and Tanvi Sharma sailed to the men's and women's singles final of the 85th Senior National Badminton Championships. Sen defeated the second-seeded Kiran George in the semifinal 21-18, 21-18. Chirag set up himself a final clash with fourth-seeded Tharun M, who defeated Bharat Raghav 21-11, 16-21, 21-19. 

Tanvi Sharma, on the other hand, defeated the eighth-seeded Isharani Baruah 21-15, 20-22, 21-14.

Virender Singh Yadav to return Padma Shri in solidarity with protesting wrestlers

A day after Bajrang Punia announced that he would return his Padma Shri, the 2005 Summer Deaflympics gold medal winner Virender Singh Yadav said that he will also do the same. Yadav’s decision came after former WFI chief Bajrang Punia’s close aide won the election polls earlier this week. Virender Singh Yadav, commonly known as 'Goonga Pehalwan', received the prestigious honour Padma Shri Award back in 2021. Before that, he was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2015.  Yadav took to Twitter to announce his decision and tagged former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and athlete Neeraj Chopra. 

Our fight is not with government: Sakshi Malik after government takes action against WFI Chief

Wrestler Sakshi Malik dropped a hint at a possible return after the government suspended the newly elected WFI Chief Sanjay Singh. Malik told the ANI, "This has happened for the betterment of the wrestlers. We had been saying that this was the fight of the daughters and sisters. This is the first step. I will tell you about the decision according to the federation that would be formed." 

She went on to add, "Our fight was not with the government. Our fight is for women wrestlers, I have announced my retirement but want the upcoming wrestlers should get justice."

Former tennis star Boris Becker commented on Carlos Alcaraz' fitness issues and attributed it to motivation. Becker said, "My feeling has always been that when motivation goes down, the body suffers. If you skip some training sessions, the chances of getting injured or suffering physical discomfort are much greater. That's what happened to me when I was 20 and I think which is the case of Alcaraz as well. It seems logical to me for a young man who is so successful, it has happened to everyone."
