Neymar Jr overtakes Pele to become Brazil's highest-scorer

On September 9, Friday, Neymar Jr overtook Pele as the new all-time men’s leading scorer for Brazil with his 78th goal for the country in his 125th appearance, during their 5-1 victory against Bolivia at the Estadio Olimpico do Para, in the city of Belem. 

The magical moment happened in the 61st minute of the FIFA World Cup qualifying match, when the 31-year-old put the ball into the back of the net from close range. 

Spanish state prosecutors file lawsuit against Luis Rubiales for sexual assault

Spanish football prosecutors accused football chief Luis Rubiales of sexual assault and coercion for kissing football player on her lips. After the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, Rubiales kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso without her consent. This action by the Spanish Football Federation (REFF) President sparked worldwide backlash. The incident took place during the medal ceremony following Spain's triumph over England to win the title.

Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna, alongside his Australian partner Matthew Ebden finished as runners-up at the US Open 2023 men's doubles. The Indo-Australian pair of Bopanna and Ebden locked horns with the American-British pair of Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, as they went down 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 in a mouth-watering match that lasted for a little more than two hours. With this win, the American-England pair of Ram and Salisbury became the first team to register hat-trick of win in Open Era.

Daniil Medvedev defeats Carlos Alcaraz to meet Novak Djokovic in final

Daniil Medvedev defeated the reigning US Open 2023 champion Carlos Alcaraz to make it to the final of men's singles event on September 9, Saturday (IST). Medvedev defeated the world number 1 in a thrilling semifinal encounter at the Arthur Ashe Stadium 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. 

On the other hand, the three-time US Open champion Novak Djokovic defeated his rival Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (4) to reach the summit clash of the tournament. 

I’m not gonna think about this loss for a long time: Carlos Alcaraz after his US Open 2023 semifinal defeat

The World No. 1 tennis player Carlos Alcaraz said that he won't dwell on his exit from the tournament after losing the semifinal to Daniil Medvedev on September 9, Saturday. 

Alcaraz told reporters, “I don’t think I’m gonna think about this loss for a long time. Of course I have to learn about it. I want to be better. You know, these kinds of matches help you a lot to be better and grow up in these kinds of situations.”


R Praggnanandhaa finishes third at Tata Steel Chess 2023; Maxime Vachier-Lagrave claims title

India's rising chess star R Praggnanandhaa finished third at the Tata Steel Chess 2023 on September 8, Friday in Kolkata. The chess prodigy who ended his World Championships 2023 at second spot stood  third along with Alexander Grischuk and Vidit Gujhrati. Notably, the 18-year-old promising talent of the Indian subcontinent came on the back of a loss against the five-time world chess champion Magnus Carlsen. 

On the other hand, the former world rapid chess champion Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the title. On his first trip to India, Maxime finished at the top with seven points, followed by second-placed Teimor Radjavov with 5.5 points.

Michelle Yeoh proposed to be an Olympic committee member

Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh has been proposed to be the member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday, September 8. Yeoh won the Academy Award for best actress in 2023 for her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once". She is one of the potential members who will likely to be approved by other members in the committee next month in Mumbai.
