Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi led his side to win the team’s first ever trophy by winning Leagues Cup 2023. Not only this, but the Argentina international also scripted his name in the history of the game by being the most decorated football player. Lionel Messi embraces David Beckham and Victoria Beckham after Leagues Cup Final win

Inter Miami defeated Nashville SC 10-9 in the Leagues Cup Final on August 20, Sunday. It was the first win of Miami since their inception and with that Messi won his 44th trophy. After the match, Lionel Messi hugged Inter Miami owner David Beckham and his wife Victoria Beckham. Though the former English footballer has a record of winning 19 major trophies during his tenure as a footballer, this was his first win after the retirement and turning into the club's ownership. 

Not only this, but after the win, Messi, who is known for his humility, astonished everyone by giving Miami’s former captain DeAndre Yedlin his captain armband and inviting him to lift the trophy. Earlier, when the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner joined Miami, Yedlin had willingly given up his captaincy to the Argentina superstar. 

Avinash Sable fails to qualify for 3000m steeplechase finals in World Athletics Championships 2023

Indian athletes got off a poor start in the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.  India’s top distance runner Avinash Sable failed to qualify for the finals of the men’s 3000m steeplechase event.  The Indian athlete failed to make it to the summit clash after finishing seventh in heat number one on August 17, Saturday. 

Sable won silver medals in the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2019 Asian Championships. The athlete had been practicing abroad on Sports Ministry’s funding to prepare for the prestigious tournament. Not only this, but he was also exempted from domestic tournaments and competitions. For obvious reasons, the 28-year-old athlete was expected to perform better.

Manchester United are reportedly reconsidering their decision to bring Mason Greenwood back in the squad. Earlier, the United chief Richard Arnold had planned to reintegrate Greenwood in the squad. However, as per the latest reports and developments, the club is now thinking over the decision as the news of getting the footballer back in the team leaked, and the club had received severe backlash from their supporters. 

Deepak Punia wins bronze; Sumit reaches final at U20 World Wrestling Championships 2023

Continuing their winning spree, Indian wrestlers added more medals to India’s account on August 19, Saturday at the U20 World Wrestling Championships 2023. While Deepak Punia won a bronze medal in the 77kg category, Sumit made it to the final of the 60 kg category of the Greco-Roman competition. Next, Sumit will be up against Armenia's Suren Aghajanyan.

Indian women’s 25m pistol team bags gold in Shooting World Cup 2023

The Indian women’s 25m pistol team won the gold medal at the ISSF Shooting World Cup 2023 in Baku on August 20, Sunday.  India’s star trio of Rhythm Sangwan, Esha Singh and Manu Bhaker registered a score of 1744 to beat Chinese Taipei in the final. Tien Chia Chen, Tu Yi Tzu and Wu Chia Ying of Chinese Taipei shot 1743 to secure silver while China settled for the bronze medal. With this win, India won its third gold medal at the ISSF Shooting World Cup 2023.  

R Praggnanandhaa holds Fabiano Caruana to draw in first game of FIDE World Cup semis

Indian chess Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa held world number two Fabiano Caruana to a draw in the first classical time-control game of the semi-final on August 19, Saturday. The 18-year-old, who was playing with the black pieces, defended a slightly disadvantageous position, to ensure that his American counterpart didn’t find a way to force a win after 78 pulsating moves.
