Two of the senior Indian players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired Test cricket within a week. Firstly, Rohit announced his retirement from the longest format via Instagram story on May 7. After a few days on May 12, Kohli also called off red-ball career through a post on Instagram. Notably, both Kohli and Rohit already bid adieu to the T20I format following India’s T20 World Cup win in June 2024. Now, both the players also hung up their boots from the longest format.
However, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will continue to play in the ODI format for India. Now, the fans have been wondering when they will see both Kohli and Rohit in India colours following their retirement from T20Is and Tests. The last international match they both played was the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai on March 9. India’s next international assignment will be against England where they are scheduled to play five Test matches starting on June 20. As both Kohli and Rohit have retired from the longest format, we will not see them playing in the red-ball series in England.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s next international assignment
Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will now be seen playing in the ODI format in international cricket. With this, both the players will be looking to get themselves prepared for the ODI World Cup in 2027. However, if we talk about their next international assignment. India are scheduled to play nine ODI matches in the remaining year 2025. After the end of the England Test series India are scheduled to tour Bangladesh for three ODIs and five ODIs. The first ODI will be played in Dhaka on August 17. This means that both Kohli and Rohit can be seen returning in international cricket with this series.
However, there are also reports coming that India’s tour of Bangladesh might get cancelled due to the political tensions between both nations. In that, case, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma can be seen taking on the field for India with a three-match ODI series against Australia. The first match of the series is scheduled to be played at Optus Stadium in Perth on October 19.
