In the ongoing first semi-final between India and Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Stadium, Shubman Gill was given a warning by umpires despite taking Australia opener Travis Head’s catch cleanly. Batting first after winning the toss, Australia captain Steven Smith elected to bat first and Cooper Connolly got dismissed on a duck. However, Travis Head didn’t surrender to India’s bowling attack and produced some fine strokes from his bat. In the ninth over, India skipper Rohit Sharma handed Varun Chakravarthy the ball and the spinner brought an end to Head’s innings on the second delivery of the ninth over.

On the spinner’s second ball, Head lofted towards the long-off and Gill grabbed the opportunity with both hands which concluded the Aussie’s innings at his score of 39 off 33. Gill who took the catch didn’t take time to release the ball after grabbing it which brought the intervention of umpires. However, the umpires didn’t take a stern decision and left Gill with just a warning. As per the ICC guideline, "The act of making a catch shall start from the moment when the ball first comes into contact with a player and shall end when a fielder has complete control over both the ball and his own movement."

India cruising towards target

As of writing India are heading towards the target comfortably as the Men in Blue have amassed 208 runs for the loss of four wickets in 32 overs. Virat Kohli is at the crease nearing his ton while KL Rahul is also supporting him from the other end.

Following the departure of both openers Gill and Rohit, the 91-run stand off 111 balls between Kohli and Shreyas Iyer stabilised India’s innings. India have played against Australia in knockouts twice in the history of the Champions Trophy and got success on both occasions.
