The draws for the Wimbledon Championships 2023 have been announced with some intriguing match-ups in the first round of the grass-court Grand Slam.
In the women's singles, defending champion and World No. 3 Elena Rybakina will begin her campaign against American Shelby Rogers. Rybakina, who won her maiden major title at Wimbledon last year, has been in fine form this season, winning the Italian Open on clay and the Indian Wells Masters.
Other notable first-round matches in the women's draw include world number one and French Open champion Iga Swiatek against Lin Zhu, 19-year-old prodigy Coco Gauff will face Sofia Kenin. In the men's singles, two-time champion and British favorite Andy Murray will face compatriot Ryan Peniston, who received a wildcard into the main draw.
Murray, who won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, has been showing signs of improvement on grass after winning two Challenger titles on the surface in recent weeks. The 34-year-old is currently ranked 39th in the world and is hoping to make a deep run at his home Slam.
World number two and seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic will start his bid for another Grand Slam against the Argentinian Pedro Cachin. Dominic Thiem will face Stefano Tsitsipas in a mouth-watering first-round clash. Another contender and World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz will open the tournament against former World No. 4 Jeremy Chardy. The 136th Championships start at the All England Club on Monday, July 3.
