The auction for the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) was successfully conducted in Mumbai. While there were some surprises, it did leave several in awe some key players who were considered to bag hefty sum of money were left unsold, including the likes of Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin and many others.
While it was Annabel Sutherland and Indian uncapped player, Kashvee Gautam, who grabbed the limelight, getting sold for INR 2 Crore, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, also made some big revelation in regard to the tournament. Talking on the sidelines of the WPL 2024 Auction, Shah confirmed that the WPL 2024 will be held in the month of February. He further clarified that like the inaugural edition, the tournament will be hosted in just one state.
Jay Shah, who is also the Convenor of the WPL Committee said, “It is decided that we will have the tournament in February, most probably we will start in the second or third week.” “As far as the venue is concerned, it will be held in one state only so that it is better logistically - what if we do not get two venues in one city,” he further added.

However, the 35-year-old did not reveal the state which will host the tournament, he added, “We can do it either in Bangalore or in Uttar Pradesh. We have o many venues, even in Gujarat, where we have Ahmedabad, Rajkot and after a few years later Baroda can build their own stadium”.
While this move will be decided in the days to come ass the decision is jointly taken by the BCCI along with the franchises. “We will sit together and decide. But it will be in one state, that is sure,” Shah confirmed.
All the reports around the WPL 2024 being played in a multi-city format were put to rest, however clarified that as the league expands, it will be made into a multi-city format.
