The Indian Women’s Cricket team faced a heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the final match of the 2022 Commonwealth Games as they lost it by 9 runs. After restricting Australia to 161/8, India tumbled despite some brilliant batting by captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues and got bowled out for 152. A middle-order collapse did not help India’s cause to beat the mighty Aussies.

Losing quick wickets derailed India’s chase and the team settled for silver. However, although India missed the gold medal, clinching silver in their maiden appearance was a big deal. Also, for a team undergoing transition, it was a determined performance and the fans did acknowledge the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team’s efforts.

But, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly found it disappointing. Ganguly shared a tweet on Monday where he congratulated the team for their silver medal but said that they will go home disappointed. “Congratulations to the Indian women's team for winning silver ..But they will go home disappointed as it was their game tonite ..@BCCIWomen,” tweeted Ganguly.

While there was no reaction from any team India player, the fans certainly did not like this tweet from Ganguly. They came hard at the BCCI President for putting in the ‘disappointment’ word. While a few called him ‘shameless’, a few reminded Ganguly that Women’s IPL is still due and he needs to act at the earliest. “With all due respect Sir, we need Women’s IPL even a month long,” wrote a user.

Coming to the game, India drew early blood in the form of Alyssa Healy's wicket. Renuka Singh got rid of the star batter. However, Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning helped Australia bounce back with a 74-run stand. But acrobatic efforts from Indian fielders and some disciplined bowling helped India restrict Austrlaia to 161/8.

In response, India lost both their openers - Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma - within the first three overs. But captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues teamed up to stitch a 96-run partnership and keep India alive. However, India kept losing wickets from thereon and eventually lost the match by 9 runs.
