The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday, March 10 announced candidates list for 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. The elections which are scheduled to be held in April - May 2024, the date of which is yet to be announced by the government, will see Yusuf Pathan contest the polls from West Bengal’s Berhampore seat.

The Baroda-born cricketer is said to compete against Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for the Lok Sabha polls. However, Congress is yet to reveal the name of the candidates for Bengal but Chowdhury is likely to recontest the election from here having won it five times previously. Pathan now becomes the third cricketer from the 2011 World Cup winning team after Gautam Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh to join politics. 

Taking to social media, the 41-year-old cricketer extended his gratitude towards the Founder of All India TMC and West Bengal CM. He also revealed his plans if he gets the seat in order to uplift the poor and the deprived. “I’m eternally grateful to Smt. @MamataOfficial for welcoming me into the TMC family and trusting me with the responsibility to become people’s voice in the Parliament,” he captioned the post.

“As representatives of the people, it's our duty to uplift the poor and deprived, and that is what I hope to achieve,” he concluded.

Irfan Pathan reacts after brother gets Lok Sabha nominations

Yusuf Pathan’s brother and former cricketer Irfan Pathan took to X (formerly Twitter) to wish the retired cricketer on his new journey. “Your patience, kindness, help to the needy, and service to people even without an official position can be easily noticed. I am confident that once you step into a political role, you will truly make a difference in the daily lives of people,” he captioned the post on X.
