India’s journey at the Commonwealth Games has changed a great deal over the years, especially for women. What began with a handful of pioneering results in the 1990s has grown into regular podium finishes across weightlifting, badminton, shooting, athletics and more. Many of those same athletes went on to make their mark at the Olympics, World Championships and Asian Games, turning early Commonwealth success into lasting careers.
These athletes have paved the way forward for generations to come. Medals matter, but so do the moments that shifted expectations and the careers that opened doors for others. The ranking below looks at both the results at the Games and the wider impact each female athlete has left on Indian sport.
India's Five greatest female Commonwealth athletes
Picking India’s five greatest female Commonwealth Games athletes is never easy. You end up weighing medals against impact, consistency against that one unforgettable moment, and how much each one shifted what young Indian girls thought was possible. However keeping all these factors in mind we take a look at India's five greatest female Commonwealth athletes
1. Karnam Malleswari
Karnam did not collect a haul of Commonwealth medals the way later athletes did. Her main CWG result was a silver in weightlifting at Victoria in 1994. But she was the one who first made people take Indian women weightlifters seriously. World titles, an Olympic bronze that made history in Sydney 2000, and the quiet message that girls from small towns could lift heavy and win big. Without her, the path for everyone who followed would have looked different.
2. P.V. Sindhu
Sindhu’s Commonwealth story is the rare complete set. Bronze in Glasgow 2014, silver on the Gold Coast in 2018, and finally the gold in Birmingham 2022. She kept showing up, kept improving, and eventually closed the circle. That progression and the fact she did it while carrying the weight of being India’s biggest badminton star puts her near the top.
3. Saina Nehwal
Delhi 2010 still feels special for every Indian. Saina Nehwal won the singles gold in front of a home crowd that expected everything from her, and she delivered under ridiculous pressure. She added another singles gold in 2018 (beating Sindhu in the final) and became the first Indian to win two Commonwealth singles titles. She made gold feel achievable rather than miraculous.
4. Heena Sidhu
Heena Sidhu has been one of the most reliable players for India. She won a gold in the 10m air pistol pairs and silver in the individual event in Delhi 2010. Then in Gold Coast 2018 she took gold in the 25m pistol (with a Games record) and another silver in the 10m. Four medals across two Commonwealth Games, always delivering when India needed points on the board.
5. Anju Bobby George
Anju Bobby George won the bronze medal in the long jump at Manchester 2002 (6.49 m). That was it for Commonwealth medals. But in an era when Indian athletics rarely threatened the podium at major multi-sport events, Anju was already competing with the best in the world. Her later World Championship bronze and Asian Games gold confirmed what the Commonwealth result had hinted at, she was a genuine trailblazer.
