Hokato Hotozhe Sema from Nagaland has hit a remarkable milestone in his sports journey by clinching the title of World No. 1 in the men's Shot Put F57 category, according to the latest World Para Athletics Rankings. This incredible achievement not only places him at the pinnacle of global rankings but also enhances India's reputation in the realm of para athletics.
It's yet another moment of pride for both Nagaland and the entire nation. Sema previously made history as the first athlete from Nagaland to secure a Paralympic medal for India, bringing home a bronze in the men's Shot Put F57 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024. His ascent to the top further solidifies his status as one of India's premier para-athletes.
Nagaland's Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio extended his heartfelt congratulations to Sema, noting that this accomplishment has brought great honor to both the state and the country, as he said, "Heartiest congratulations to Subedar H. Hokato Sema, AVSM, on becoming World No. 1 in Men's Shot Put F57 in the latest World Para Athletics Rankings. This outstanding achievement makes Nagaland and the nation proud. I wish him continued success in the years ahead."
Earlier, Sema also earned a bronze medal in the Shot Put F56/F57 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, adding yet another significant international accolade to his impressive collection.
Hokato Sema’s Path From Military Service to Para Athletics Champion
Hokato Hotozhe Sema's story is one of incredible resilience and unwavering determination. As a Junior Commissioned Officer with the Assam Rifles, he began his journey in the Indian Army as a Havildar before rising to the rank of Naib Subedar with the 9 Assam Regiment. His ultimate dream was to serve in the Special Forces.
However, in October 2002, during a counter-infiltration operation near Chowkibal along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, tragedy struck when he stepped on a landmine. The explosion resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee, a life-altering event that occurred when he was just 19 years old.
Rather than succumbing to despair, Sema chose to rebuild his life through sports. He took up shot put at the age of 32, which is quite late compared to most international athletes. His dedication and hard work on the field eventually led to both national and international success. His bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics made him the first Paralympic medallist from Nagaland, while his achievement at the 2022 Asian Para Games showcased his consistent performance at the highest level.
In addition to his sporting accolades, he was honored with the Arjuna Award for his contributions to para athletics. More recently, he made history as the first Paralympian to receive the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), recognizing his distinguished military service and excellence in sports. Now, with a World No. 1 ranking, Sema continues to add remarkable milestones to a career that is truly defined by perseverance and achievement.
