In the high-stakes world of professional tennis, where on-court rivalries often spill into personal lives, a fresh controversy has emerged involving some of the sport's young stars. The story reportedly broke during Anna Kalinskaya's interview on the First&Red podcast, following her third-round exit at the 2025 US Open, where she fell to world number one Iga Swiatek in straight sets. It is said that her comments added a layer of spice to her reportedly tumultuous romantic history in the tennis circuit. She first gained headlines when she began dating then ranked number two Jannik Sinner in May 2024. However, their romance reportedly fizzled out within a year.
WTA player Anna Kalinskaya, recently single after her high-profile split from men's world number one Jannik Sinner, has stirred the pot by revealing that Danish player Holger Rune slid into her direct messages on social media ten times without getting a response. "Someone wrote like 10 times and then gave up. I'll say who it is now, Holger Rune," Kalinskaya said in the interview.
Adding further she said, "Now I'm older, I don't know, for some there's no chance! No need to write." Clapping back on his part Rune posted a screenshot of the interview clip and wrote: “Ha ha ha. We might have cultural differences that make Anna read a comment on a story as an invitation to a date. If I want to go on a date, I ask for a date. Don’t worry.” The Copenhagen native, who reached the semifinals at this year's Australian Open and has been a consistent top-10 presence since breaking out at the 2022 Paris Masters.
Jannik Sinner confirmed his breakup with Anna Kalinskaya during a press conference at the Italian Open in May 2025
After they reportedly began dating in 2024, Jannik Sinner and Anna Kalinskaya kept their relationship relatively low-key at first, but it quickly became public fodder amid their shared travels on the tour. Following the former’s victory in the 2024 US Open final, the couple were seen in a romantic gesture, kissing each other. However, Sinner confirmed the breakup during a press conference at the Italian Open in May 2025, stating simply, "I'm single now," while focusing on his dominant form. Since then, Sinner has clinched the Wimbledon title in July 2025 and reached the finals at both the French Open (losing to Carlos Alcaraz) and the just concluded US Open (again to Alcaraz in a five-set epic on Sunday, September 7, 2025).
Anna Kalinskaya, ranked around No. 15 in the WTA standings, was at her career best quarter-final run at the 2024 Australian Open. This year, she captured her first WTA singles title at a Challenger event and added to her three doubles crowns. Copenhagen native Holger Rune reached the semifinals at this year's Australian Open and has been a consistent top-10 presence since breaking out at the 2022 Paris Masters. His rapid ascent, from junior world number one to Grand Slam quarter-finalist has reportedly invited comparisons to a young Novak Djokovic.
