Novak Djokovic, the Serbian international tennis player, 38, has achieved incredible feats in tennis, including 24 Grand Slam titles in his illustrious career. Djokovic is the only player in the sport to reign as champion of all four Grand Slams at once on three difference surfaces, grass, clay, and hard courts. He has won 100 singles titles in his tennis journey thus far apart from being ranked world No. 1 by the ATP for a record of 428 weeks over 13 years.
In a recent interview, Novak Djokovic supported the decision taken by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to increase the prize money for the US Open by 20%, making it £67.4 million, the largest prize pool in tennis history. He states that it is a step to the right direction if the players were thinking of this figure in their mind. However, Djokovic also remarked that there is still room for a lot of improvement in regards to prize money at Grand Slams, wanting to increase it further to aid the lower-ranked players in particular.
Not many tennis players live out of this sport globally: Novak Djokovic
This increase in prize money at the US Open occurred after the top 20 male and female tennis players signed a letter demanding a greater share of revenue from all the four major Grand Slams. Djokovic stated that not many players are able to live out of this sport because of which there should be a major increase in the revenue share. Djokovic said, "I see that in the past when I talk about this topic, people like to say, 'well, look at him, wanting more money for himself'. It's not about that."
"I'm just talking about overall. Not many tennis players live out of this sport globally. That's not something that I see has been talked about enough,” he added. Moreover, Novak Djokovic is set to begin his US Open campaign at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York City, on Sunday, August 25. The all-time great will be facing the American international Learner Tien in the first round.
