Tejas Shirse, an Indian hurdler, has made waves in the athletics world by delivering a stunning performance at the Indian Athletics Series-9 in Ludhiana. At just 24 years old and representing the Reliance Foundation, he clocked an impressive 13.27 seconds in the men’s 110m hurdles, smashing his own national record of 13.41 seconds set earlier this year. This remarkable achievement not only cements his status as one of Asia's top track athletes but also secures his spot for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Just a week after clinching the gold medal at the Federation Cup in Ranchi with a time of 13.50 seconds, Shirse's latest record showcases his incredible progress, as he improved his previous best by nearly 0.14 seconds. Throughout the race, he demonstrated his dominance, even managing to overcome a hurdle that got in his way. This marks the second time he has broken the national record, further solidifying his place in Indian athletics.

Tejas Shirse Secures Commonwealth Games Qualification

Shirse’s remarkable performance also got him the ticket to the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Athletics Federation of India had set the qualification time at 13.39 seconds for the men’s 110 meter hurdles race. Shirse crossed this threshold with ease by running the distance in 13.27 seconds. This timing was obtained at the final qualifier for the Commonwealth Games, and thus, its significance cannot be overlooked. With this qualification, he will likely have the opportunity to represent his country in athletics at the multi-sport event.

Shirse’s incredible timing has not only set a new national record but also catapulted him into the ranks of the continent’s top hurdlers. With a remarkable time of 13.27 seconds, he currently holds the sixth-fastest performance in Asia this season. The only athletes ahead of him are Japan’s Rachid Muratake (13.05s), Shunsuke Izumiya (13.13s), Tatsuki Abe (13.26s), along with China’s Junxi Liu (13.22s) and Yuanjiang Chen (13.22s). This achievement also makes India just the third Asian country, joining Japan and China, to have a male hurdler clocking in under 13.30 seconds in the 110m hurdles. Shirse’s impressive run has not only boosted his own profile but has also enhanced India’s reputation in this event.
