The badminton went into ecstasy as top-seeded PV Sindhu began the India Open badminton with a victory, while former World No.1 Kidambi Srikanth defeated Siril Verma in straight sets to reach the second round of the tournament. However, what caught everyone’s attention was young Indian shuttler Ashmita Chaliha as she shocked Russia’s Evgeniya Kosetskaya.
P.V Sindhu defeated compatriot Sri Krishna Priya 21-5, 21-16 in the 1st round of the India Open, while Srikanth dominated Siril Verma and won the first set with 21-17 followed by the second set which he won by 12-10.
“I need to tune up my skills and also learn new weapons; I think everybody is going to read your game. It’s very important that you keep changing strategies every single time when you play with a particular player”, Sindhu said after the game.
However, what surprised everyone was young Chaliha defeating top-notch Russian Evgeniya Kosetskaya by 24-22, 21-16 in straight sets. Chalihas took just 31 minutes to shock the badminton world by beating the Russian player. Notably, the experienced Indian men’s doubles combination of B Sumeeth Reddy and Manu Atri along with men’s singles fourth-seed Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand have withdrawn from the competition.
