On Saturday night, Jayden Maiava led Southern California to comfortable 45-31 victory against Michigan State at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in LA. The Trojans quarterback threw for 234 yards and a total of four touchdowns in the convincing victory on Saturday night. While the game had its moment, the Michigan State team were handed another blow.
During the game which saw the Michigan side come shorthanded after losing linebacker Jordan Hall, on Saturday, they lost his replacement in Wayne Matthews III. The linebacker was left injured while attempting to make a tackle on an option run by Waymond Jordan with only 42 seconds remaining in the first half. Soon after the move, Matthews was stranded on the ground, seeing his teammates call for medics.

While the MSU medical staff carted him off the field, leaving the side worried of losing another linebacker. Although, the player moved his legs and arms while the staff appeared to cut off his jersey, rushing him to the trauma facility at the LA General Hospital. Although a detailed assessment of his injury is yet to be revealed, but it looked he was involved in a collision on a tackle back of a USA ball carrier. The MSU has however stated that Matthews’ motor skills are intact.

Following the game, players from both teams came together in the middle of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to pray for Matthews in a moment of solidarity. USC coach Lincoln Riley also reckoned the move in the post-game interview, stating, “This game is obviously competitive and everybody gets into it, obviously it’s our livelihood here. But at the same time, there’s things more important than it.
“When you see anybody down there whether it’s on your team or anybody else’s that has a scary injury like that, your heart goes out to them. We’re all human beings out there at the end of the day. Heard some potentially positive news and we’ll all be praying for his full recovery,” Riley added during a USC radio interview.
