It is going to be a new era at the Royal Challengers Bangalore. While Virat Kohli had already announced his decision last year to step down as the captain and be associated with the team only as a player, the franchise recently appointed Faf du Plessis as their skipper. With Kohli’s international cricketing commitment coming to an end early as India wrapped up the second Test in three days, it was expected that he would join Du Plessis at the team hotel in quarantine, however, King Kohli has reportedly taken a break.
It is being reported that the former India captain has opted for some time out of the bio-bubble and he will be joining his RCB teammates in a few days. Notably, there is going to be a three-day mandatory quarantine this time around before a player can be out for training along with the other teammates.
As far as Kohli’s batting form is concerned, his Test average dropped to below 50 for the first time since 2017 after he had a couple of low scores in the recently concluded Pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka. The right-handed batter made 23 runs in the first innings and 13 in the second.
With no international hundreds to his name since 2019, Kohli will be looking to make the most of his IPL stint and carry forward that form into international cricket. The entire nation as well as the fans from around the world are patiently waiting for Kohli to overcome what could be regarded as a bit of a lean patch from his own high standards.
The 33-year-old might even open the batting in IPL 2022 which he has tried in the past. However, there could be a new opening pair for Bangalore this time with Du Plessis likely to partner Kohli. RCB will begin their IPL campaign on March 27 against Punjab Kings.
