India wrapped up a dominant display against West Indies in the ODI series in Ahmedabad, completing an impressive 3-0 whitewash with a comprehensive 96-run victory in the 3rd ODI on Friday, but there was something that happened during the IND vs WI match which did not really impress former Indian cricketer turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar.
After India managed to set a target of 266 runs for the opposition on a difficult wicket for batting, the bowlers backed up the performance by batters as West Indies were eventually bowled out on 169. All the three pacers of India – Deepak Chahar (2/41), Prasidh Krishna (3/27) and Mohammed Siraj (3/29) – also made their mark on a day, when the side hardly did anything wrong.
However, there was one major area of concern for Team India on Friday i.e. their fielding. There were a couple of dropped catches and few runs conceded on-field and Rohit Sharma looked quite vocal about his side’s disappointing performance as a fielding unit. Amid all those, there was one moment which even left on-air commentator Sunil Gavaskar in absolute disbelief.
After Odean Smith mistimed a ball off Mohammed Siraj, the ball was going straight into the hands of Suryakumar Yadav, who took a couple of steps forward from his position at short mid-off.
Sunil Gavaskar, who had predicted that a wicket could fall anytime, took a few seconds before realizing that SKY had dropped the catch. He was heard saying, “Kya kiya? Chor diya? Arey yaar!” and his reaction was probably quite a candid and honest one, which would have been the genuine response at the moment by all the Indian fans.

Although the dropped catch was not something that would have made Sunil Gavaskar happy, India’s overall performance in the IND vs WI 3rd ODI certainly brought a smile on his face.
Meanwhile, talking about the missed catches off his bowling, Siraj admitted after match that it’s part and parcel of the game. He added that his focus remains on him doing his best with the ball, which is something in his own hands.
