It is the end of the road for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils' season became worse after they were handed a defeat by Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford. In all likelihood, the only real thing left to play for them is a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Although Ralf Rangnick's side did appear to have the intent to win and made a few attempts to score but were outwitted by Atletico Madrid as Renan Lodi's goal proved to be enough to draw curtains to United's journey at the continental tournament this season.

In hindsight what seems to be salt in the wounds of the United fans is that they dominated possession for the large parts of the second half but so apt was Atletico's defence and the goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, himself that the shot-stopper managed to keep a clean sheet.

Minutes after the final whistle, there have been all sorts of reactions pouring in on social media. While fans of the Premier League giants were visibly upset with their star player Cristiano Ronaldo. "Penaldo" happened to be the biggest trend on Twitter with angry fans terming him a "penalty bully" and lashing out at him for not doing enough to create decisive chances.

And now a video has surfaced on the internet in which spectators at the "Theatre of Dreams" can be seen throwing bottles and other objects at Atletico Madrid manager Simeone. The reaction is enough to suggest that United fans have had enough and while they hoped that the inclusion of Ronaldo would coincide with a change of fortunes, even his first season since his reunion with the club is set to end without a trophy.

United will next meet Leicester City in a Premier League encounter and have a lot of work to do if they want to compete in the Champions League next season.
