New Zealand have announced the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against West Indies at home starting on November 16. The major update from New Zealand’s squad is that star batter Kane Williamson has opted out of the ODI series a few days after his retirement from the T20I format for the Black Caps.
Williamson made this decision because he wants to focus more in Test cricket and will be available for the upcoming Test series against Windies starting on December 2. Williamson announced his retirement from T20I format on November 2 but still continues to play in Tests and ODIs. Now, the veteran has also decided to pull out off the upcoming ODI series to shift his focus on the World Test Championship.
Mitchell Santner to lead New Zealand in ODI series vs West Indies
Star spinner Mitchell Santner will continue to lead the New Zealand Cricket team in the upcoming ODI series against West Indies. The first match of the series will be played in Christchurch on November 16, followed by the second match in Napier on November 19. The third and the final ODI of the series is scheduled to be played in Hamilton on November 22.
“The West Indies are always dangerous and have a host of players who can change a game in any format. We’re expecting a competitive contest throughout the series. It’s another key series for us as we continue to grow and improve in the format, so we’re looking forward to what’s to come,” New Zealand Head Coach Rob Walter said during squad announcement as quoted in India Today.
