Chairman of Indian men’s selection committee, Ajit Agarkar is set to continue his tenure as Chief Selector in the BCCI till July 2026. As reported by the Indian Express, the Indian Cricket Board offered an extension to Agarkar ahead of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025. Now, the former cricketer has accepted the extension and will continue as Chief Selector till July 2026.
Ajit Agarkar was appointed as Chief Selector of the Indian Cricket team in July 2023. In his tenure, the Men in Blue finished as the runners-up in the home ODI World Cup in 2023. Apart from that, India also finished as champions in the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025.
“Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026, and he had accepted the offer a few months back," a BCCI official told the Indian Express.
BCCI to remove one selector as Ajit Agarkar set to continue
Although Ajit Agarkar is set to continue as Chief Selector for one more year, the BCCI is also likely to remove one selector from the selection committee. The current selection committee comprises of Ajit Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra and S Sharath.
However, there is an uncertainty whether Das and Banerjee will be given extensions or not. Apart from that, Ajay Ratra will also complete one year in the selection committee in September while Sharath was also promoted junior selection panel to senior men’s committee in January 2023. It looks like the BCCI going to replace one of these names in the selection committee with Ajit Agarkar being the Chief Selector.
