Australia spinner Adam Zampa was reprimanded and handed a demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for contravening the apex cricket body’s code of conduct. During the first One-Day International (ODI) played between Australia and South Africa in Cairns on August 19, Zampa was seen using foul language following a misfield and overthrow on his bowling. The incident took place in the 37th over of the contest and it got recorded on the stump microphone and it was also broadcast live on TV.

With this act, Zampa violated Article 2.3 of the Code, which is linked to the "use of an audible obscenity during an international game". "One demerit point has been added to Zampa’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points," ICC remarked.

Adam Zampa admitted to his offence and also received the punishment handed by the match referee. "There was no need for an official hearing, as Zampa admitted to his offence and accepted the official sanction as proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees," added ICC.

In the opening ODI against South Africa, Australia faced a 98-run loss but Zampa looked decent with the ball as he picked up 1/58 figures in his 10-over spell. Following the crushing defeat, Australia will look to make a comeback in the second game to be held in Queensland on August 22. The hosts will expect their batting unit to step up and deliver a solid show in the remainder of the series.
