The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday, August 22 further introduced several changes in the structure of the domestic cricket tournaments. With the domestic cricket season for 2025-26 scheduled to start later this month with the Duleep Trophy, the BCCI on Friday announced a revamped structure in the one-day tournaments.
According to the latest update by the BCCI, all domestic one-day tournaments, including Vijay Hazare Trophy and others will have a plate group. As per the statement from the Indian cricket board, all major domestic events “like the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy and U-23 men’s state ‘A’ Trophy will follow a model that will have teams placed across four elite groups and one plate groups.”
BCCI introduces plate group format in domestic cricket tournaments
It is to be noted that the elite and plate group format previously was only used in the Ranji Trophy. As per the previous system, two teams - the finalists of the plate group were promoted to the elite group whereas the bottom-placed sides were relegated.
But with the new system being implemented from this year onwards, “only one team will be promoted/relegated between elite and plate groups.” Moreover, this format will be used in all one-day tournaments, including the Vijay Hazarem Syed Mushtaq Ali as well as the senior women’s T20 trophy.
