Days after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup 2025, set to be held from September 9 to 28 in the UAE, there were reports of star batter Shreyas Iyer replacing Rohit Sharma as India’s next ODI captain. However, the speculations had hit the roof after the Indian middle-order batter was snubbed a place in the Asia Cup squad.
As per a report quoting the Dainik Jagran, Shreyas Iyer has been in consideration to become India’s next ODI captain after his crucial performances in the format for the Indian side. While Iyer had a memorable campaign in the ODI World Cup at home in 2023, where he amassed 530 runs in 11 matches, he also finished as the top run-scorer in the Champions Trophy 2025.
There have been no such discussions: Devajit Saikia on Shreyas Iyer’s appointment as India’s ODI captain
While this news spread like wildfire, BCCI Secretary, Devajit Saikia recently cleared air on the same while bringing in surprise stating that this has been a news to him as well. “That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” Devajit Saikia told Hindustan Times.
Notably, this comes at a time where the BCCI is reportedly grooming Shubman Gill as India’s next all-format captain after he was appointed as India’s red-ball captain followed by being named as Suryalumar Yadav’s deputy for the upcoming Asia Cup. The media publication also quoted a BCCI source, who hinted of Shubman Gill’s likely being named as India’s ODI captain.
"He averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found some success and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket when the time comes," a BCCI official said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
