In the last few days, there have been lots of speculations regarding Rohit Sharma’s future in the Indian Cricket Team. After his retirement from T20Is and Tests, several reports are coming that the BCCI is also not considering Rohit and Virat Kohli for the next ODI World Cup which is scheduled to be played in South Africa in 2027. However, there is no official confirmation from both the senior players and Indian Cricket Board.

Although there are chances for Rohit Sharma to play the 2027 ODi World Cup, the management still needs a player, who could lead Team India in the 50-over format after his retirement. Currently, Suryakumar Yadav is captain of the Indian T20I side while Shubman Gill is newly appointed Test captain. Apart from that, Gill is also currently the vice-captain in the T20Is and the ODIs which indirectly indicates that the young star batter is going to be all-format captain of India in the future. However, talking about the ODI format, it looks like the BCCI has different plans apart from Gill.

Shreyas Iyer to become next ODI captain after Rohit Sharma: Report

As per the report in Dainik Jagran, the BCCI is considering star batter Shreyas Iyer to take over the ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma in the future. Iyer has been a crucial performer for India in the ODI format in the last couple of years and established himself as a consistent batter in the middle-order. He had a memorable campaign in the home ODI World Cup in 2023 amassing 530 runs in 11 matches including a hundred in the semi-final. Apart from that, Iyer was also India’s top-scorer in the Champions Trophy 2025 triumph.

Recently, Shreyas Iyer wasn’t picked in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 despite his remarkable performance in IPL 2025 which left the fans wondering. However, according to the latest report, it looks like the BCCI is considering Iyer to get a long run in the ODIs as he can be seen taking the leadership role in the 50 overs cricket in future.
