Shubman Gill, the Indian Test captain, revealed that the two Indian legends who inspired him to play cricket are none other than Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, in a podcast on Apple Music. The 26-year-old is currently a part of India’s T20I squad for the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, where they made a perfect start to their campaign in Group A with a thumping nine-wicket win over the hosts a couple of days ago at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

On the podcast show, Shubman Gill talked about how he got into cricket because of Sachin Tendulkar, understanding the sport during 2011-13, apart from stating the Indian legend is his dad’s favourite. Then, he shared details about starting to follow Virat Kohli, who had the passion, hunger apart from skills and the technique to succeed at the sport.

“That was also the time I began following Virat Kohli closely. I loved watching the way he went about his business, the sheer passion he had for the game, and the hunger he carried. You can learn all the skills and all the technique, but hunger is something you either have or you don’t. Virat had it in abundance, and that really inspired me,” said Shubman Gill about Virat Kohli, with whom he shares the dressing room in the Indian cricket team.

Sachin Tendulkar denies rumours of contesting BCCI President election

There were rumours circulating around Sachin Tendulkar, linking him to the post of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President over the past couple of days. But, these rumours were put to rest by Sachin Tendulkar through a statement shared by his management group, in which he categorically denied running for BCCI President after Roger Binny’s tenure in the post came to an end last month.

Notably, Rajiv Shukla is currently serving as interim president of the BCCI with the elections set to happen on September 28 in Mumbai, which is coincidentally the day of the Asia Cup 2025 final. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the governing body for Indian cricket later this month will also have the elections of the Vice-President, secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer as well.

The official statement of the SRT Sports Management Pvt Ltd on the matter read, “It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations.”
